What is Psoriasis and how do you get it?

Posted by Byron Darroch on

Psoriasis is unfortunately a lifelong skin condition that affects well over 7 million Americans.

It is an autoimmune disorder. Basically, your immune system mistakenly attacks skin cells which forces that area into hyper-production of skin cells to compensate for the attack.

Psoriasis presents itself most commonly as red, inflamed patches of skin with whitish-silver scales.

Other signs include dry skin that cracks & bleeds and itchiness or burning sensations around these patches.

It is a cyclical condition that has flare-ups for a few weeks or months then goes into remission for a period of time.

Triggers

Common triggers include:

  • Stress
  • Infection like skin sores or strep throat
  • Cold, dry weather conditions
  • Certain medications
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
