Both of these are well known for those of us who suffer from acne prone skin. However, while there is some efficacy, there are also serious skin consequences to using these active ingredients.
Benzoyl Peroxide:
Benzoyl Peroxide based products come in various strengths—the stronger they are, the more risk of adverse effects. This makes sense, and in fact, evidence suggests that extra strength may not give better results.
Here are common skin issues associated with their use:
-
Skin dryness
-
Skin irritation
-
Dermatitis
-
Redness
-
Itchiness
-
Skin barrier damage
-
Skin pain
The problems are usually mild to moderate, but keep in mind that benzene, a cancer-causing agent, has been detected in Benzoyl Peroxide based products, so caution is advised.
Salicylic Acid:
Also common in product for acne prone skin, is Salicylic Acid. It is less irritating than Benzoyl Peroxide, but quite likely to cause reactions on sensitive skin.
The main issue with Salicylic Acid is its exfoliating action, which creates a serious risk of damage to the skin barrier.
➡️ Note: Salicylic Acid is unsuitable during pregnancy as it’s a teratogen, and also while breastfeeding due to the risk of transmitting the aspirin-like compound to the baby.
